Dart points are one of the most underestimated components of a dart. Yet, they can make a huge difference in your game. Whether you're just starting out with darts or have been playing for years, it's important to know which dart points best suit your style. In this blog, we cover everything you need to know about dart points! From choosing the right tip to maintaining and swapping them, you’ll discover the different lengths available, what Swiss Points are exactly, and which dart points work best for you. We’ll also answer frequently asked questions such as: Are 40mm dart points good? or Can you change the tip on every dart?
When choosing dart points, there are several factors to consider:
Grip: The grip of a dart point determines how securely the point stays in the dartboard. Some points feature extra grooves or coatings for a better hold.
Length: The length of the dart point influences the balance of your dart. More on this later.
Material: Most dart points are made of steel, but there are special options like Swiss Points that make swapping them easier.
Always ask yourself: How do I choose the right dart points? and Which dart points best stay in the board? These questions will guide you in selecting the perfect match for your playing style.
Dart points typically range between 32mm and 41mm in length, but there are also longer variants available up to 50mm.
They provide more stability during a throw.
There is less chance of bending or breaking.
They create more space between darts on the board.
They are better suited for players who aim close to the board.
Why choose longer dart points? Because they make it easier to group your darts without them knocking each other out of the board. If you're a player who often “stacks” darts, longer points can greatly benefit your game.
If you're wondering, are 40mm dart points good? For many players, yes—they offer a balanced mix of control and board space.
Changing your dart points can be either simple or complex, depending on the system you use.
There are two common methods:
With a repointer: A special tool that pushes the old tip out of the barrel and allows you to insert a new one.
With Swiss Points: In this system from Target, you use a key to quickly swap out the tip.
A common question is: Do I need a repointer? The answer is: only if your darts do not have a Swiss Point system. In that case, you can replace almost any steel dart point using a repointer.
Can you change the tip on every dart? In principle, yes—as long as the barrel is sturdy enough and you have the proper tools.
After extensive use, dart points can become dull, which makes it harder for them to stick in the dartboard. This can lead to frustration during play, especially when darts bounce off the board. Therefore, it’s important to sharpen your dart points regularly.
Better grip in the board: A sharpened point ensures a more secure hold.
Longer lifespan for your darts and dartboard: Keeping your points in top shape helps them last longer.
Fewer bounces while playing: A well-maintained point minimizes flukes and misthrows.
There are several methods to sharpen your dart points:
Using a sharpening stone: Small, portable, and easy to carry—perfect for quickly touching up your tip.
With an electric sharpener: Ideal for a professional approach; it provides a very even sharpening.
Using an integrated sharpener in a dart case: Convenient for on-the-go maintenance.
Note: It’s important not to make the point too sharp as this can damage your dartboard. A slightly rounded tip is usually the best compromise.
