How do I choose the right dart shafts?
04/02/2026
Short answer: The right dart shaft depends on two things: your grip on the barrel and how your dart lands in the board. For beginners, a medium nylon shaft is the best starting point. If your dart sits too steep or hangs too far forward, adjust the length: a shorter shaft for a hanging dart, a longer one for a dart that sits too steep.
Dart shafts sit between the barrel and the flight. They directly affect the stability and angle at which your dart hits the board. A shaft is not neutral: the wrong length or material can noticeably hurt your grouping and consistency.
This article explains which material and length to use and when, and which variants exist beyond standard shafts.
Which material is best for dart shafts?
For most players, polycarbonate (plastic) offers the best balance of weight, durability and price. Aluminium shafts are lightweight and provide good stability, but they bend on impact and break more easily. Nylon shafts are slightly heavier, more flexible and less vulnerable.
Material comparison:
Material | Weight | Durability | Best for |
Aluminium | Light | Average (bends easily) | Advanced players |
Nylon | Medium | Good | Beginners & casual players |
Polycarbonate (PC) | Medium | Very good | All levels |
Some polycarbonate shafts contain an added weight insert. This allows you to increase the total dart weight even with a lighter barrel, without having to replace the barrel.
Which shaft length should I choose?
Shaft length partly determines the flight angle of your dart. Choose the right length based on how your dart lands in the board:
Dart hangs forward (flight lower than tip): use a shorter shaft.
Dart sits too steep (flight higher than tip): use a longer shaft.
Standard sizes:
• Extra Short
• Short
• Inbetween
• Medium (most commonly used by beginners)
• Long
Brands like Cosmo Darts and L-Style offer additional in-between sizes. Start with medium and adjust based on what you observe. Professional players use either short or medium depending on their grip and barrel balance.
What shaft variants exist beyond standard shafts?
Besides loose shafts, there are two variants that keep your flight more securely in place:
Shaft rings: Small rings that you slide over the shaft after attaching the flight. They prevent the flight from coming loose during play. Standard and inexpensive.
Integrated flight-shaft systems (e.g. Condor Axe): Flight and shaft are combined into one unit. Advantage: the flight always sits in exactly the same position, making your throw more consistent and the flight less prone to deforming. Systems like the Condor Axe are available directly at Dartshopper.
L-Style shafts with cup: Feature a special cap (cup) on the shaft that holds the flight in place. Lower risk of loose flights without separate rings.
Does shaft colour matter?
Colour has no effect on your performance. It is purely aesthetic. Choose a colour that matches your flights or personal preference. Dartshopper carries an extensive range in virtually every colour and material combination.
Which dart shafts suit my darts?
Start with a medium nylon or polycarbonate shaft, throw a series, and check how your dart lands in the board. Then adjust the length. Material is secondary: polycarbonate lasts the longest, aluminium is the lightest. View the full dart shafts range at Dartshopper.
