Female Darts Players
08/22/2022
When you search for 'female darts players', 'darts women', or 'female dart players' on the internet, one face quickly emerges: Fallon Sherrock. The English player is not only a leader in her field but also managed to enter the PDC Order of Merit among all men in November '21. She achieved this by reaching the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts, where she ultimately lost to Peter Wright. Additionally, Fallon was the first woman to beat a man at the PDC World Championship, reaching the third round by defeating Ted Evetts and Mensur Suljovic. For many female darts enthusiasts, Sherrock is what Michael van Gerwen is to many male Dutch fans.
But Fallon Sherrock is just one of many great female dart players. There's also four-time women's world championship winner Lisa Ashton, two-time world champion Mikuru Suzuki, Anastasia Dobromyslova, first WDF World Darts Championship winner Beau Greaves, and of course notable Dutch dart players in the past. Think of Francis Hoenselaar (2009 World Championship win and 5x Runner Up in the final) and Mieke de Boer.
The woman with the most world titles is Trina Gulliver. She won 10 world titles on the famous Lakeside stage. Darts has existed for a long time, but only recently has there been a separate women's competition and ranking list.
Women's Ranking List
In 2001, the BDO decided to organize a women's tournament alongside the men's tournament. The first edition was won by Trina Gulliver, who ultimately won 10 world titles. Since 2021, there has been a Women's Series Order of Merit alongside the PDC Order of Merit, giving female dart players their own ranking list.
This does not exclude women from entering the PDC Order of Merit, as Sherrock did. Lisa Ashton even managed to obtain a tour card during the tough Q-school in England among the men. Fallon Sherrock also made an attempt but narrowly missed.
Currently, Lisa Ashton is at the top, followed by Fallon Sherrock and Lorraine Wistanley. When comparing the lists, you quickly see that the prize money differs significantly. This is naturally because women's darts is still in its infancy compared to men's darts, but it won't be long before a significant increase takes place.
The current Dutch darts world also has its female representation in professional darts: Aileen de Graaf is currently at the top of the Dutch rankings, followed by Anca Zijlstra, with Sharon Straatsma and Aletta Wajer sharing third place.
Women's Darts: Same Rules, Same Products
With the rising popularity and presence of women in the darts world in recent years, a market has emerged for products targeted at female players. Or actually, mainly product designs, because the rules for darts remain the same, whether it's about dart boards, dart arrows, shafts, flights, or barrels.
Therefore, it remains recommended to start with darts between 21 and 27 grams, mainly 24 grams, regardless of gender. The weight of dart arrows is a personal taste developed over playing years. However, you see that women's darts are often played with lighter dart arrows on average.
Lighter dart arrows are often accompanied by longer shafts, so your dart arrow has a more stable flight. If you go for heavier darts, a shorter shaft is a better idea. What you also want to pay attention to is the grip of your barrel. Unless you're already an experienced player, you want a barrel with good grip. This helps form a stable stance and throw, and you can slowly start looking at lighter grip.
Designs for Female Players
Apart from dart specifications, there are, just like with male dart players, special dart designs based on popular female dart players. There's the Lisa Ashton design, available in three different weights, or the extremely popular Fallon Sherrock designs.
